Disequilibrium without Vertigo
Lee Tae-Kyeong

Sung Ki-Bum
Abstract
As a subtype of dizziness, disequilibrium is rather a restricted term which means sensation of imbalance occurring only in standing or walking and is not related to an abnormal head sensation. Imbalance with subjective vertigo is usually resulted from acute asymmetry of vestibular tone. However, imbalance without vertigo implicates several situations such as slowly losing vestibular function, cerebellar lesion, and proprioceptive dysfunction. Disequilibrium may be the presenting symptom of lesions involving the motor centers of the basal ganglia and frontal lobes. Besides the fore mentioned lesions, many other situations which potentially influence the multi- sensory integrating system may give rise to the imbalance. This review is to provide the cause and practical approach to the patient presenting with disequilibrium without vertigo.
